On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh and forcibly evacuated the city within days. Nearly two million Cambodians perished under the regime. My family, Chinese immigrants who had settled in Cambodia in the 1950s, were living in Phnom Penh at the time. After Pol Pot’s fall, they spent several months in a Thai refugee camp before arriving in France.
